Another common self-confidence issue is feeling insecure when it comes to co-workers. Chances are you’ll find you have something in common to talk about. Asking questions about the other person is always a great way to go. Ask “open” questions that invite the other person to talk. These questions often begin with a phrase like “What do you think about… ” or “How did you…” instead of questions that invite simple yes or no answers.

Conflict Resolution

It is not pleasant having to deal with conflict and with difficult people, but communication skills certainly make the task easier. There are proven communication techniques you can learn to help with this. If you are in a supervisory or managerial position, it is worthwhile attending a course specifically on conflict resolution and dealing with difficult people.

In general, remember that an overbearing person probably has a lot of insecurities as well, and hides behind their overbearing exterior. In the midst of conflict, do your best to avoid being pulled into argumentative situations. Don’t reward the other person’s behavior by getting upset or immediately backing down. If necessary, say you’ll continue the conversation when everyone has had a chance to cool down. Dealing with negative co-workers is never fun. Try and remember that your self worth is not dependent on your co-worker’s approval, even if that person is your boss.

Upgrade Your Skills

Learning is a lifelong process and my advice is if in doubt, the solution is probably to learn more. If you’re feeling unsure about your skills, it’s probably time to go back to class.

Many companies offer continuing education options and will gladly pay for schooling, or offer professional development in house, because they know it makes you more valuable and productive for them.

Whatever your employer offers in the way of education and training, take advantage of it. If your company does not offer training, educate yourself by reading good books on the subject. Ask your colleagues for suggestions, or if you’re a member of any type of professional group, seek advice there as well. Many of your peers will have good suggestions on what’s worth looking into.

Take On New Challenges

Finally, regularly give yourself new challenges. One great way to build your self confidence at work is to take on a special project. Especially if you are able to choose something you feel passionate about or something in your specialty area, you will be able to demonstrate to yourself and your colleagues that you are able to produce results.

To take on a new challenge demonstrates initiative and willingness to be part of special projects. What better confidence booster could you ask for, than to know that you put yourself out there and didn’t sit on the sidelines.

In the two previous blog posts, we have discussed four important steps in job hunting – plan, prepare, practice and perform. You might think that all is done after your interview, but there is one final step – post mortem. Check out the final step to seal your dream job.

Step 5: Post-Mortem

Once your interview is over, review it in your mind. Was there anything you should have said that you didn’t, or anything that you said that you shouldn’t have? Make a mental note, or write down how you felt about the interview. By reviewing your interview, you can prepare for the next one.

Once you get home, it’s time to prepare a thank you letter. In this letter you thank the interviewer(s) for their time and the opportunity to find out more about the company. Express appreciation for the way they handled the interview, the information provided, etc., as well as expressing your desire to work for the company. If there was anything you forgot to tell them about your skills during the interview, or any information you said you would provide them with, now is your opportunity to do so.

Don’t forget to follow up one to two weeks after your interview to indicate that you are still interested in being considered for the position and to check on whether or not a decision has been made. If they have hired, and you are not the successful candidate, ask permission to call back in case there are any other openings in the future and let them know that you would like to be considered.

Remember that you usually have to go through about 200 “no’s” before you get to a “yes”. Try to keep positive about your job search by sticking with a routine and talking with as many people as possible about looking for work. Let everyone know that you are currently unemployed and tell them the type of work you are looking for. What are your Strengths and Weaknesses? – The Right Answer

Two related questions that often trip up job candidates are “What are your strengths?” and “What are your weaknesses?” The first can be difficult simply because the interviewer is often looking for a specific answer, and the second because it seems to force you to say something negative about yourself. It’s possible for anyone to give a good answer to either of these with proper preparation, however. Keep reading to find out how.

“What are your strengths?”

The secret to answering “What are your strengths?” well is to know what the interviewer is looking for. This can be difficult to do in the middle of an interview, since interviewers are often aiming to be inscrutable. That’s why you need to know the right answer well before the question is asked.

The key to what the interviewer wants should be right there in the original ad for the job. If the ad is seeking a “detail-oriented” candidate, talk about how your strength is your ability to pay attention to detail. Conversely, if the ad declared a desire for candidates who “work well on a team”, talk about how well you work with others. Don’t lie or invent things, just focus on the areas that are emphasized in the job description. Also be sure not to exaggerate, or sound like you’re arrogant.

“What are your weaknesses?”

The other question, “What are your weaknesses?”, is actually something of a trick question. The interviewer doesn’t really want an employee with serious weaknesses, and is hoping to fool you into revealing any you might have willingly. On the other hand, everyone has weaknesses, and saying that you have none will only make you sound like you’re not very self-aware (or like you’re lying). So you do have to pick something to say for this question.

The key to this question is also in the job description. What you need to do is give a weakness that doesn’t have any bearing on the job you’re applying for. Don’t stray out of the work arena when choosing a weakness, but pick one that wouldn’t hinder you in doing the particular job you’re seeking in the slightest. If the job requires you to work with other people all the time, say you get bored working alone. If the job requires organizational skills, say you don’t do as well in a disorganized environment, and so on.

Finally, even though you’re giving a weakness that doesn’t have any bearing on the job, you still need to say how you make up for your weakness. Mention something you do to work past it or how you’ve been working to improve yourself. They don’t want an employee who can’t be bothered with self-development.

Remember, what the interviewer is really asking you is: “Are your abilities suited to this job?” Using the information you have about the job, you should be able to craft an answer that will easily satisfy the interviewer.
