Resume Tips for Fresh Graduates

Every fresh graduate must be really proud that they finally get hold of that hard-earned diploma. This has caused many new graduates to rely on the notion that their degree or diploma major is enough to convey to a potential employer the depth of their skills and qualifications.

What they don’t know is that a carefully designed resume, through strategic presentation of key program elements and your personal areas of focus, will quickly demonstrate to an employer the skills you bring to the table; this in turn allows you to stand out from other candidates.

For new graduates, employers are looking for three things:

Academic results

The more experience you have, the less importance your academic results have. But, if you are a fresher, putting academic results on your resume might bring you benefits. In general, A good result means that you should have chosen the right degree and completed it successfully. It also shows that you are a committed person that is goal-driven.

Work experience

It is imperative that you have work experiences in a job that provided experience looking after customers, working in teams and developing good work habits such as punctuality and initiative. Part-time jobs provides the new graduate with experience handling responsibility whether it is opening or closing the store or helping to train new employees.
Even if your experience is not in your specific field, sometimes it is worth putting it on your resume, if you put it right.

In their chosen field, employers greatly value the work that graduates have done, whether as a laborer or as a summer intern. New graduates must understand that employers value their experiences because it could provide them with referees, a potential track record of accomplishments, teamwork, problem- solving skills and people skills such as customer service. Many new graduates undervalue the strength of these transferable skills that have built up during their work experiences. These core strengths can provide the new graduate with a distinct advantage in creating a targeted qualifications summary and keyword section for their resumes.

Extracurricular & Leadership Experiences

Extracurricular activities can provide an employer with a sense of a person’s initiative and drive. Your hobbies, volunteer work, and personal interests can provide insight into your values, energy and interest in the world at large, such as their willingness to get involved and achieve results.

5 Reasons to Make a Web Portfolio Now

So you have polished your resume and send it to some potential employers. You have reviewed your social media pages and completed your LinkedIn profile for a powerful online presence.

Think you can relax and wait for endless interview calls? Think again.

Ask yourself: have I updated my web portfolio recently; or even more crucial: have I got a web portfolio? If the answer is no, you must realize that you haven’t maximized your chance of getting that job you’ve always wanted.

You’re more than just a piece of paper

When you have to sort through hundreds of job applications every day, it can be difficult to see the applicants as a person with a life; they are merely a piece of paper with similar contents. Therefore, through a cool web portfolio, you can show your vibrant personality by choosing design, layout and the copy you write. The hiring manager will see you as a complete person with unique personality, opinions and interests.

For the world to see

Web portfolio, by virtue of being online, are likely to turn up in search results: the place where everyone seeks everything. So, if you optimize your web with the relevant terms for your field of work, whenever somebody runs a search with those terms, your resume will be among the results. Thus, you increase your chances of being identified as a potential candidate for a job position. With web resumes, you open up a whole world of opportunities.

Something for everyone

I hear you saying “but I’m not a designer or a writer, why should I need a web portfolio?”

Well, in this digital era when everything has been digitalized, people lean on search engines to find everything they need. So, once a company receives your application, it’s inevitable that, as they begin to decide who to bring in to interview, someone will go to Google and type in your name. A solid web portfolio makes a very good impression and gives you an online visibility and presence, especially when many of the other applicants (who thought they didn’t need a web portfolio!) didn’t even bother putting the time and energy into electronic portfolios of their own. In fact, having a web portfolio in an industry where nobody has it will prove your potential employers that you can think outside of the box — a valuable skill in any job.

Additionally, most jobs nowadays require high computer and internet proficiency, so having a web portfolio is a great way to show your prospective employers that you are well-versed with digital media: an advantage over the rest of your competitors.

Resume extension

You must have read one of the endless debates about how long a resume should be. Most experts opined that an effective resume should not exceed two pages; but how could you fit in your years of education, experience, skills, personality and interests in those limited pages? The answer is web portfolio.

A solid online portfolio allows you to create a full picture of yourself. It allows you to expand on your resume and actually demonstrate who you are and what your abilities are as a professional. Besides showing off your resume and projects or other impressive works, your website could also contain a personal statement, a blog covering issues related to your field of interest, recommendations from past employers, and more. All of this will help you build a solid online portfolio for potential employers to see. Even better, they can quickly and easily decide what and how many of your presentation they’d like to see.

One of the greatest advantages of a web portfolio over the traditional paper resume is its flexibility. With only a click of a button, you can change content, videos, copy and pictures on your online portfolio. You can also constantly create new content to add to your site to show your continuous learning process—whether employed or not. Just make sure you constantly update it; an abandoned web portfolio may backfire.

Create a powerful web portfolio now

Thus, with so many advantages, it would be silly to not make the most of this amazing tool. We do realize that web portfolios are not standalone; you still need to pay attention to your traditional resume.

So, the first step now is to polish your resume first; or better yet, get a professional to do it for you. Then, create a nice web portfolio (not amateurish-looking of course!) and embed the link clearly on your resume.

How to Act Naturally during the Interview

download (5)

When you prepare to enter professional environments for the first time, there is often a virtual avalanche of advice to consider. From where to apply, to how to present a resume, to what to wear to an interview, college graduates and other young professionals hear so many tips that it can be hard to keep everything straight without feeling immense pressure. One thing that helps some you to relax is to consider things from the employer’s standpoint.

Most businesses go to great lengths in order to present themselves well, both to prospective clients and to potential employees. Some offices hire decorators to arrange things in the most aesthetically pleasing way possible; some invest in programs to improve the functions, capability, and appearance of online business; and of course, people in well-run business environments always seem to be dressed impeccably to make a good impression. When you consider all of these things, and that you’re not the only one focusing on making a good impression, it can be a bit easier to focus on presenting yourself well while staying relaxed.

With that in mind, here are 5 tips on casual ways to improve your image and persona during a professional interview.

Dress Well, But Comfortably

Usually, this tip is phrased a bit differently: “dress to impress,” or “dress professionally.” However, while it is important to present a polished and professional physical image, it is also important to maintain your comfort. Feeling constricted, overdressed, or out of your natural element can lead you to feel more nervous, which can be disastrous during an interview. Try to find a nice combination between appropriate professional attire and comfort – for women, that might mean opting for the dress instead of the suit, and for men it might mean shirt and tie, but no jacket. Your appearance is important, but your demeanor is more important, and you will act more naturally if you feel more comfortable.

Accessorize Professionally

If you want a simple way to enhance your outfit without taking away from your comfort, consider simple accessories that can make you seem mature and professional. This could be anything from wearing a nice watch or belt, to wearing tasteful jewelery or a class ring, or even simply having a pen on you in case the need arises. Interviewers like people who are prepared and punctual, and these sorts of accessories give you exactly that sort of image.

Act Happy To Be There

Getting away from image a bit, it is also important to act happy to be at your interview. Instead of focusing so much on your next answer, focus on what happens if the interview goes well. After all, you’re there trying to get a job that you presumably want – act happy about the possibility! Remembering that securing an interview is often the hardest part of the process is a great way to relax and show enthusiasm. This cannot be faked, and no perfect answer can substitute for enthusiasm and a bright, cheerful demeanor.

Forget About Their Questions

As alluded to previously, a great deal of interview tips revolve around how to structure the right answers to common questions. But instead of focusing on how to answer a question, you might feel more natural preparing to elaborate on your strong points. The questions will come, and they will often be different – and since there’s no way to predict them with certainty, anticipating them can make you nervous. Instead, know your own resume, background, and strengths, and know the company you’re interviewing with. The questions will give you opportunities to use this information. In short, focus on your answers – not trying to guess the questions.

Get Your Mind Off The Handshake

Finally, try to ignore one of the most popular tips out there – to give a firm handshake. Of course, the handshake is important, but focusing on it, or preparing for it, often results in making the real thing stiff, practiced, and awkward. Appearing comfortable is more important than showing off the strength in your hands.

Get interviewed for your dream job

Before worrying about how to behave on the interview, first you have to think how you could get the interview! One of the best ways to get a lot of interview calls from the right company is to submit an excellent resume, tailored to the position you are applying for. Sometimes, crafting a resume might be even harder than mastering the art of interview and negotiations, so why not leave it in the hands of professionals?

A creative resume could also help you during the interview. When you submit a creative resume, you have stolen the interviewer’s attention from the beginning. Then, the interviewer will be much more enthusiastic about your prospects at the company when he/she is interviewing you.

Questions to Ask before Hiring a Resume Writer

Hiring a resume writer is a great idea to increase your chance of getting hired. But not all resume writers are created equal. How do you distinguish between the good, the bad and the ugly?

resume process

Understanding how the resume writer works will increase the odds that you will be satisfied with the final product. Find out about our process at Style Resumes here.

Some resume writers might display one price and then look to charge another. So, it’s always a good idea to clarify everything up front. Find out when you pay, how you pay and how much you pay. Be sure to ask if there are any extra fees, such as requesting the final product in a specific format, edits, etc. At Style Resumes, our prices are all fixed and have included three revisions and endless consultations.

It sounds simple, but in several cases, the person at the resume writing company with whom you speak with, is NOT the person actually doing the work. It is recommended to speak directly with the person who will be performing the service you are paying for, especially when it is as personal as your resume. When you purchase our service at Style Resumes, you will be matched with a resume writer who is most suitable for you and you are welcome to have as many consultations with him/her as you want.

Many of the resume writers specialize in specific fields. That’s not to say a good writer couldn’t do a nice job on your resume regardless of industry. But if you’re coming from a niche part of the business world, you want to make sure the writer has a solid understanding of what you do. You can’t expect them to know the ins and outs the way you do, but they should convince you that they have a basic comprehension of the industry and target. At Style Resumes, we are a team of solid professional resume writers who are experienced in various industries. So, when you engage in our service, you will definitely be matched to a resume writer who truly understands your industry.

Even though credentials might not be the utmost importance, it’s something highly touted by many writers. Style Resumes writers are accredited by the most prestigious governing bodies, so you really do not need to worry.

So, with those questions in mind, what are you waiting for? Engage in our various resume writing services now!

The Do’s and Don’ts in Calling to Check Your Job Application

In this tough job market, it makes sense to call your potential employer after you submit your job application to increase your chance of getting hired. However, this can backfire if you don’t do it right. Check out how you can make your call successful instead of annoying.

The Do’s

  1. Give it time. Although a good percentage of companies do have human resource departments that focus on nothing but employee management and hiring, other companies do not. For example, if you are applying for a job as a full-time cashier at a local grocery store, chances are your application will be reviewed by the store manager who has a million other tasks to complete. Your application will not be reviewed as soon as it is received. Wait at least three or five days before calling to check the status of your application.
  2. Consider your options for making contact, along with their pros and cons. You can check the status of your application via phone, email, or in person. Each option has their pros and cons. For example, you don’t want to interrupt a hiring manager while they are busy. So if you show up in person to check the status of your resume; you get personalized contact, but you also have the option to leave and come back later if you notice the place you’re applying to is filled with customers.
  3. Show that you are excited and hopeful that you will get a job interview, but don’t show desperation. You might be surprised how many job seekers call daily. After the second or third time, desperation sets in. Regardless of how much you need to have a job, don’t let this desperation show. It is okay to mention that you would love the chance to land a job interview, as the company seems like a great place to work. It is not okay to mention that you really need the job because your bills are piling up.

The Don’ts

  1. Don’t make contact when you know the manager will be busy. You should also take into account the business when calling to check the status of your job application. For example, if you are looking to work in a restaurant, do not call in the middle of the breakfast, lunch, and dinner rushes. Sometimes it is hard to know when the best time to make contact is, but you don’t want to cause a fuss or interrupt a busy day.
  2. Don’t demand a job interview. When calling to check the status of your job application, tread carefully. You don’t want to imply that you expect to get a job interview. Not all applicants do. Instead of saying “when can I come in for an interview,” opt for “My name is Joe Smith; I applied for the full-time bartender position on (date). Have you had the opportunity to review my resume?”
  3. Don’t keep pestering the supervisor or hiring manager. It is okay to call on the status of an application once, and possibly twice if they ask you to call back again later. With that said, you do not want to become the job seeker who goes from casually calling to check the status of your job application to the job seeker who calls everyday looking for a job interview. This approach will create a bad impression; it does not make you standout in a good way and it often backfires.
