Keep it relevant

Even though you might have 10 pages of job experience, try only to include relevant employment skills. For instance, if you’re applying for a position in sales, it’s probably unnecessary to mention your summer camp counseling job you’ve held for the past three summers. If you want to include your irrelevant experience, try to pick out the relevant skills you acquired, such as tediousness or multitasking skills.

Keep it neat and easy to scan

When we read, we tend to skim, and so does your dream job’s HR recruiter. Long paragraphs hurt eyes and no HR recruiter would give your resume a second look amidst hundreds of job applications they receive. Thus, bullet important information and bold each resume header. Make it easy for them to glance over your important information. Also, keep it short. No HR recruiter has time to read a 1000 words essay.

Include a cover letter

If you have worked as a contractor for a period longer than three months, or if you have ever owned your own business, it is important that you indicate that on your resume. Highlight those attributes of the job experience that qualify you as a perfect candidate for the job that you are seeking.

Your job responsibilities should be listed in the same way as they are for any other full-time job you’ve held; focus on those responsibilities which best meet your career objective and quantify your achievements when possible.

Exemplify your self-starter attitude under the Qualifications section of your resume. Make sure to list any employability skills you have acquired or strengthened while you were self employed.

As a final indication of your commitment to the job you are seeking, make sure that your cover letter or email addresses anticipated concerns of your potential employer. Make references to anything on your resume that may raise questions.

If you still own your own business, but are looking for full-time work, for example, make sure to let your employer know what your long-term professional goals are and how you intend to balance your roles at both businesses.

Don’t apologize for being self-employed. Your resume and cover letter should present you as a credible and passionate professional. Volunteering in the college breaks or at weekends is another great way to build up much needed work experience. If you’re struggling to find something to do, then try searching for local charities or community projects that may need your help. It’s important to note that they won’t always advertise for positions, so you’ll probably need to take the lead and start contacting people yourself. Again, this shows a willingness to push yourself into new situations – all great qualities from an employer’s perspective. If you are successful, then being able to show how you contacted local organizations and place yourself in a volunteer position will all look great in an interview situation.

Side Projects

If you’re really struggling to find something, then you could always consider starting something yourself as a side project. Being able to do something related to your chosen career will look fantastic to a new employer, especially if you’ve had the initiative to try and do something yourself. For example, if you’re looking to get into web design then having your own website from which you can explain your process, and how you’ve grown the traffic will really help you to stand out.

Use period, commas, semi-colon,quotation marks, brackets and many others accordingly in order to make the content organized and comprehensive. Be mindful of keywords. Every job has their respective job descriptions and if the writer utilized those keywords to your advantage that highlights your strengths into your resume your chances of being hired will be higher than just using unnecessary descriptive words that does not emphasize any of your credentials and abilities.

Writing is supposed to be a great tool to convey information or messages through particular audiences, getting the message across the person reading it is far more important than stringing multiple words in order to fill the blanks that probably appears like you are a human answering machine with default answer to every question. Having a thousand words in resume does not ensure you that job, if your resume looks like a mess and is hard to read it may even cost you that job. But remember, you should always match a pair of slacks with heels, not flats!

For an interview, why not wear a nice dress with professional cut? You can play with it a little. Just because you are required to turn up for the interview looking all professional and poised, it doesn’t mean that you can’t experiment with colors! You can go for turquoise or deep red to make a lasting impression. You can also dress yourself in neutral colors but don’t forget to add interesting detail such as a tiny belt or necklace. Enhance your figure

A belted pencil skirt can be worn with a skinny belt. The addition of the belt will place focus on your waist and make it look tiny. After all, women want to look thin, don’t they? If you are curvier, you can wear your blouse out and belted over the pencil skirt instead.

Look demure but professional by pairing your pencil skirt with a feminine blouse. If you want to show off your vibrant personality, you can wear tops with prints or patterns. If your blouse is plain colored, opt for accessories to complement the overall look, such as classic pearls.
