Writing Your Resume – A Step by Step Guide

So you are fresh out of school and need to write your first resume. Or, you might have a resume but realized it’s a total mess and you want to do it right. Here is a step by step guide to writing a resume that works.

Choose Your Job Target

The very first thing you must do is choose your desired job position. Perhaps you already have a specific job in mind. You may have read an advertisement in your local newspaper or otherwise found out about an interesting job.

Keep in mind, that when you are writing a resume, you must write with all of your focus being on that one job position. Your mind, and resume, should be completely centered around the one specific position you desire.

Assess Your Qualifications

Take a sheet of paper and on the left side, starting at the top and working toward the bottom, write down the requirements of the job. For example, if the job requires customer service skills, write that down.

Next, look at each of the job requirements you wrote down earlier. Now, directly to the right of each job requirement, write down yes (if you are experienced in that skill) or no (if you are not experienced in that skill). After each yes write down how many months or years of experience you have.

Now, it is time to do some self-assessment. How do you think other people would rate your level of skill in that area? Beginner, intermediate or expert?

Here is a way to help you do this self-assessment. If you are often seeking information and help then you are most likely a beginner. If you occasionally help other people and show them how to do something in regard to that skill then your own level is likely to be intermediate. Finally, if you are known as the “go to” person for that skill area it is safe to consider yourself to be an expert in that skill.

Write down your skill level for each skill that you wrote yes after.

Cater to the Employer’s Needs

Now you should realize you have a sheet of paper showing all of your strengths, as well as weaknesses, as they apply to the job you are seeking.

What you need to do is write your resume, beginning with your objective statement, in a manner that focuses on your strengths.

For example, if the job you desire requires customer service skills, and you have much experience in customer service, you could write the following for your objective statement: Obtain a job in customer service where I can use my years of experience to provide exceptional support for your customers.
