Planning a Career Exit Strategy

Exit Sign

No matter how much you love your job, some things are meant to end; and your career might be next. Whether the company is undergoing a massive reorganization or your boss just retired and some hotshot took his place, you can’t put a price on being prepared to jump when the time is right.

Here are 5 things you can do to map out a Career Exit Strategy in case things go wrong.

Keep your resume fresh

Your resume is your weapon to survive and stand out in the cutthroat job market. Once you have the ultimate resume, update it every three months. Make sure you change the dates and use the present tense for your current job. Add any major projects. Since there are so many job sites that can store your resume, it’s important to make the rounds and update ALL of them.

Keep in touch with your contacts

Let us tell you one thing: your contacts list is a gold mine, so make sure to have regular communication with them. What we meant by contact is anyone you have ever met, at any job, ever. You never know where anyone will end up, so it’s important to be nice to everyone. You can manage your contacts in LinkedIn, so it is important to add people to your LinkedIn circle as soon as you meet them, and then maintain a powerful and active LinkedIn profile. Don’t come around only when you need a job.  If you communicate more frequently, your actions won’t appear as transparent.

Apply for jobs when things are going well

Fate is funny; the good offers will come when you’re as perfectly happy with your job. When you’re desperate, you’ll end up being alone with no job offers, as if employers can smell desperation. This is also useful because you will keep your interview skills sharp.  It is an art form, and if you use it – you won’t lose it.

Attend professional conferences

The number of trade shows, expos and social networking events are greater than ever.  The people at these convention centers are often looking to hire talented folks or are just like you – laying the groundwork for an escape route. Therefore, you’ll make contacts fast in such events.  If you can’t find a hook to get work to pay then you should shell out the coin and attend on your own.

Load up your ammunition

We’ve already covered keeping your resume fresh. Along the same lines, it is very wise to stockpile references and documents that will make you look like the hottest jobseeker ever.  When you complete a successful project, make a note of it.  When you accomplish something impressive, slide it into a folder.  Also, get a reference letter at your annual review. It’s tricky to ask the big bosses when you’ve already given your two weeks notice; you need to hit them up before they get all bitter and resentful on you.

5 Ultimate, Quick Job Search Tips

post-unemployment

How long have you been in the job search pit? By now, you might’ve learned the traditional ways of job searching don’t work anymore. So here are 5 things you can easily do that will quickly improve your job search results.

1. Scan your resume for 15 seconds – what message does it send?

That’s exactly what an employer will do. So, if you don’t get a clear message about what you can do for them, then it is not a good resume. Since this is the most important document in your career, make the investment and have a good resume professionally prepared.

2. Focus on the high-return job efforts.

Job boards have less than a 5% effectiveness rate while networking has over a 50% effectiveness rate. Start by selecting 10 to 30 companies where you would love to work. Do a company search on LinkedIn and identify the decision makers and their staff. Then see who you know who might know someone who can make an introduction for you. Follow the company and people on LinkedIn and Facebook, join their groups and conversations, comment on their blogs and become known. This is how you move from a passive wait for the right job to appear on the job boards to an active job seeker targeting the kinds of positions you really want.

3. Optimize your LinkedIn Profile.

If a recruiter was searching through LinkedIn to find people for the position you are seeking, would you show up? Try it and if you are not on the first or second page, go back to your profile and pepper it with the right keywords to get yourself a higher ranking. A simple trick is to look at the profiles of the people who rank well and follow some of the things they did. Or, you can get your LinkedIn profile done professionally.

4. Review your Online Presence.

88% of employers will Google your name to see more about you. Make sure you look good on LinkedIn (100% complete profile), review your activity in Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and any other online account. Take down or change any comments that reflect poorly upon you. Use your own blog, online exchanges and testimonials to showcase your professional knowledge.

5. Create measurable goals.

Searching for a job is like any other project and you must stay disciplined, so set firm goals for yourself. For example, “I will make 10 networking calls and have 2 meetings per week”. Make sure you are focusing on high-impact efforts like networking versus job board submissions. Keep a record of you efforts so if an employer calls, you can quickly determine when and how they were contacted.

Time for a resume makeover!

Low Han Yee Resume

Getting a job isn’t the easiest thing in the world. However, having a badly written or ill-formatted resume won’t help your cause, either.

In the eyes of the beholder

It may seem shallow to imagine that our qualifications, work experience, etc. take a backseat over the ‘look’ of the resume, but it’s true. The first thing that a recruiter notices about our resume is how appealing it is in terms of display. Recruiters seldom have the time to go through all the details provided in the resume, so at the very beginning if they say bad formatting, text-heaviness and other such wearing issues, your resume will not get the attention it deserves.

Enter style resumes

Thus, style resumes come to the rescue! Styles resumes creates graphic resumes are basically visually appealing, graphic-heavy resumes. They concentrate more on how the resume looks, rather than the wording of the content itself. This, of course, is not to say that the content isn’t important; it is! However, the way in which it is presented is also extremely important.

Graphic resume use diagrams to effectively show your achievements. Pie charts, graphs and line diagrams do in a jiffy what words would take much longer to convey. For a time-pressed hiring manager, this is ideal.

Likewise, infographics make dull, boring text stand out and make it look appealing. As mentioned before, text is extremely important to a resume. After all, it is the text from your resume itself that is converted into infographics for your graphic resume. Thus, do not make the mistake of taking the wording of your resume lightly!

Designs on you

Such graphics and pictorial depictions go hand in hand with design. You could have some of the most interesting and innovative infographics, charts, etc., but if they are not designed well, all the effort will be lost; an badly designed style resume is of no use. Thus, besides thinking about creativity, aesthetic values must also be kept in mind while designing graphic resumes.

Advantage – you

It is no secret that the job market these days is extremely tough. It is becoming increasingly difficult to secure jobs owing to the growing number of competitors. Moreover, most people applying for a particular job are equally qualified with near-similar amount of experience and expertise. In such situations, it is often a matter of luck whom the job ends up going to.

But you can make a difference. If you do not want to let your future lie in the hands of fate and want to take an active step towards securing a job, get yourself a style resume! A hiring manager who is having difficulty deciding whom to offer the job to, will be impressed by the effort and creativity you put into your graphic resume, and will be encouraged to give you the job!

Style resumes are all about understanding the elements involved and being creative. However, if you feel that you’re better off doing your job rather than creating a style resume for yourself, worry not, because Style Resumes can do that for you! How to Write a Winning Cover Letter

writing-2

Most people only focus in the resume and dismiss the fact that cover letter is a crucial element in job application. A resume is just a summary of your accomplishments and abilities, while But a cover letter enables you to let a little bit of your personality shine through and to talk directly to the hiring manager. Plus, it’s your chance to show off a little of what you know about the
company and to tell why you’re interested in the job.

Here’s a step by step guide to craft the winning cover letter.

Make a connection

First, you can make a connection by writing a strong opening paragraph which will capture the hiring manager’s interest immediately. Be sure to refer to the position you’re vying for, and state why you are qualified for the job. Remember to frame your statements in terms of how you can benefit the company, not the other way around.

It can be useful to mention the name of someone that the hiring manager knows and respects. For example, you can say “John Doe recommended that I contact you about your opening for a finance manager.” Besides that, you can also open the paragraph with a rhetorical question or an interesting quote.

It’s also important to know what tone to set in this opening paragraph. In some cases, this may depend on the industry in which you’re trying to get a job. For example, a friendly, informal tone may work well if you’re applying to a small, entrepreneurial company. While a more formal, professional tone might work better for a large law firm or corporation. On the other hand, a bold statement might work really well if you’re seeking a leadership or sales position.

Another way to make a connection is by addressing the cover letter to a specific person. If necessary, take the time to call the company to learn the name of the person doing the interviewing. This, in itself, says a lot about your initiative and attention to detail.

Sell your accomplishments

Your cover letter is your sales pitch, in which you are the product to be sold. So, make sure you know what skills the company needs and then describe how you have what they are looking for. Pick one or two of your best accomplishments or abilities, and highlight them in your letter. Sure, they’re listed on your resume too, but this tactic makes sure the hiring manager sees them right away.

If it makes sense to list a few accomplishments, then list them as bullets. This will draw the reader’s attention to that section of the letter right away. And after all, what you have to offer is the most important part of this letter.

Close with impact

Ideally, you want to leave your reader hungering to know more about you. But you also want to
be proactive. So, rather than ending your letter with the common statement, “I look forward to your call,” say you’ll call them in a few days to arrange a time to meet. If you don’t have a phone number, and couldn’t find on during your research, then try to provide an incentive for them to call you.

Some people say they’re going on vacation or out of town after a certain date and ask to meet prior to that. Others say they’ll be in an area at a certain date and time and ask for the interview during that period. Be creative, but make it as real–and company- oriented–as you can.

Visuals matter

No one likes to read a messy letter. A messy cover letter full of typos and grammatical errors will only end up in the trash bin. Thus, it’s important that your cover letter be easy to read and professional looking. Proofread, proofread and proofread, then have someone else read it and tell you what they think about it.

Leave it to the professional

Most people think that writing cover letter is an easy job. However, more often than not, they are wrong. They end up submitting a messy and unimpressive cover letter which is quickly thrown into the trash bin.
