Top 5 Hiring Managers’ Turn-offs

Hiring managers receive hundreds, if not thousands, of job applications each day. They have extremely limited time, and it has always been said that the average employer spends only 10 seconds looking at a resume. Therefore, a resume which wastes their time with irrelevant information is such a turn-off for them.

Check out the top 5 things you should never put in your resume:

  1. Personal details. Hiring managers usually don’t care about your marital status, race, sexual orientation, religious and political affiliations and whether you have children, unless they are somehow pivotal to the job. Some of these things are controversial and/or irrelevant, while others may unwittingly influence the hiring manager and become the source of discrimination. You should also never put your social security number or other sensitive information as that could be stolen or used in identity theft.
  2. Photographs and physical characteristics. Do not include a photo of yourself and/or physical characteristics like height, weight, etc. on your resume. For one thing, a photo and such physical information takes up a ton of space you could be filling with your accomplishments. Further, how you look is irrelevant to the job, unless you are an actor or model. Some employers will even avoid resumes with photos on them because they are unprofessional and can lead to discrimination.
  3. Unrelated work experience. Recruiters and hiring managers are looking for relevance and stability, so you don’t need to list every job you have ever held on your resume. For example, a hiring manager in a top oil & gas company wouldn’t be interested in your babysitting experience when you were in high school. Leave out any positions that are unrelated to the job for which you are applying unless it will leave gaps on your resume. However, if you have limited job experience, you can include slightly unrelated positions as long as you demonstrate how they prepared you for a job in your new field.
  4. Low GPAs. If your GPA is lower than a 3.5, leave it off your resume. To tell you the truth, employers don’t really care about your grades anyway. They just want you to be able to do the job. It’s perfectly fine if you want to highlight your 4.0 GPA, but don’t feel obligated to include your GPA on your resume.
  5. Unrelated hobbies and ‘achievements’. Unless your hobby is directly relevant to the position, do not include it on your resume. Anything else takes up unnecessary space and employers don’t care. You should also leave out your ‘achievement’ in a hot dog eating contest. Stick to professional and community service awards only.
